The winner
of several major awards including an RIBA award, a Roses Design Award
and several Transport Interchange awards, this £60 million project by
Building Design Partnership and Laing O'Rourke has transformed this
urban hub into a structure worthy of the 21st century.
The
original listed Trainshed building, erected in 1842 and known as London
Road Station, has been retained, while a completely new concourse and
entrance improve circulation and dramatically update the image of the
station.
The concourse was also used as a gateway for the
highly successful Commonwealth Games in 2002 and was subsequently
featured as the backdrop to TV news footage during the games. Modern
engineering techniques were employed to support the new mono-pitch roof.
Texlon ETFE Transparent cushions were used throughout the project to
maximise the natural light provision to passenger areas below.
