Shop and relax. Texlon® ETFE creates shopping oases in every climate
Shopping is about more than “buying stuff” – it is time with friends and family, to enjoy the amenities that today’s shopping malls offer and to have a great experience.
A feel-good atmosphere and protection from rain and excessive heat are important factors to give shoppers a comfortable environment. Texlon® ETFE is the perfect building skin to achieve all of that. It establishes space that is flooded with daylight but still creates acoustical comfort that invites people to stay – which increases the commercial success of the shopping environment.
Read through the following three ways of using Texlon® ETFE in shopping environments.
Grand Central in New Street Station, Birmingham, Great Britain
New Street is the busiest railway station outside London within United Kingdom. Part of an on-going scheme to rejuvenate the city of Birmingham, the existing New Street station has been completely redeveloped and an additional section was added to meet the demands of 52 million rail passengers each year. Situated above New Street station, Grand Central shopping centre opened in September 2015. This brings high quality brands and fashion into the heart of the city. The large atrium is topped by seven domed skylights with a translucent Texlon® ETFE system. The curving aesthetic from the outside is continued into the interior.
Working closely with the client, architect and engineers to realize the initial concept, Vector Foiltec designed, fabricated and installed 2,830 m² of Texlon® ETFE, as well as the supporting steelwork for the station’s central atrium. Designed by the renowned AZPML (Alejandro Zaera-Polo & Maider Llaguno Architecture), the central atrium’s supporting steelwork mirrors the shape of the complex arrangement of train track points outside the station.
The Texlon® ETFE system is equipped with a partial print pattern that provides shading for an optimized climate control while still retaining transparency. The overall effect allows the central area of Birmingham New Street station to be flooded with natural light.

The Avenues in Kuwait City is the Persian Gulf’s premier shopping and leisure destination. Vector Foiltec’s Texlon® ETFE technology encloses the promenade providing a relaxed sanctuary in Kuwait’s challenging and harsh climate. Since 2012, over 25,000 m² of Texlon® ETFE have been installed over The Avenues’ existing shopping area. The local population is able to engage in a wide variety of social, leisure and business activities, while being protected from the intense heat, enhancing ‘The Avenues’ commercial success.
The performance requirements for solar transmission through the Texlon® ETFE cladding were complex and challenging. Vector Foiltec has extensive knowledge and decades of experience in this field and was able to provide a technically superior yet economic solution. With the development of a specialized print pattern, Vector Foiltec helped solve the thermal issues and created what feels like the perfect indoor environment.
Vector Foiltec worked very closely with Mabanee Real Estate Company, Gensler and Pace, to understand their vision and realize their objectives for the ‘Grand Avenue’. During the initial 25,000 m2 contract, they were impressed with the Texlon® ETFE technology and they commissioned Vector Foiltec to cover ‘The Lakes’ – a 7,000 m2 extension. This complex geometry is comprised of over 227 triangular cushions – some of which span up to six meters. It was built at a fraction of the cost to a glazed alternative, making this a commercial oasis in an unforgiving climate.
The project is ongoing with more phases to come. Texlon® ETFE is still the choice for extended areas of the roofs and facades at The Grand Avenue mall, The Souk and Prestige. The newest areas, The Grand Plaza, The Forum, Gardens and Electra will be covered by 42,000 m2 of Texlon® ETFE – an amazing extension and a testimonial for the satisfaction with Texlon® ETFE as a building material.
The first quarter of 2016 marked the opening of this new mall which is divided into three main areas connected by a continuous mall on two floors. The shopping area is covered by a 9,000 m2 Texlon® ETFE canopy, which protects visitors from the environmental elements, but also creates a more concentrated outdoor feeling. The roof is totally unique, with Texlon® ETFE cushions of different shapes and sizes constructed to fit in the fluent roof design. The steel structure was fully designed and engineered by Vector Foiltec.
Illuminated water fountains in the central areas are visual attractions for young and old visitors. The transparent roofing system makes it possible to maintain a comfortable sound level that invites shoppers to stay.
A great achievement for all involved is that the 41 Burda Shoppig Centre has been rewarded with LEED Gold Certificate by Green Building Council.
