Texlon® ETFE Canopy over Railway Station at Heathrow Terminal 5

Heathrow Terminal 5 is an airport terminal at the main airport serving London. Opened in 2008, the main building in the complex is the largest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom. The terminal was designed to handle 35 million passengers a year. Vector Foiltec was contracted to install the Texlon® ETFE canopies above the railway station. That is a great project for Vector Foiltec in London. So, ETFE is not just aesthetically pleasing, but it has function.

Natural Daylight Floods the Platforms of the Railway Station

Vector Foiltec installed a series of printed Texlon® ETFE free-standing canopies and a large ETFE canopy over the railway station. This prestigious project was designed by HOK International, and Rogers, Stirk, Harbour & Partners architects. Even though the railway station is located underground, the Texlon® ETFE cladding panels allow natural daylight to flood down to the platforms. Further, this transparency creates an airy and spacious environment that fits in with the design concept of the building. The Texlon® ETFE canopy system allows for a lightweight design with innovative structures.

On the other hand, ETFE provides a great function for safety lovers: ETFE has a melting point of approximately 260°C. In the event of a fire it does not promote the spread of flames because it self-extinguishes and does not generate any flaming droplets or particles. This is an important attribute of ETFE for buildings – not only for railway stations or airports.

Skytrax World Airport Awards

Passengers voted Heathrow Terminal 5 the best in the world at the 2019 Skytrax World Airport Awards, held at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in London.
