Variable Shading Can Be Custom
The unique Texlon® ETFE technology at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena is comprised of three layers of ETFE foil, with two layers incorporating custom patterns designed by renowned graphic designer Bruce Mau. These patterns are integral in the system’s variable shading system technology, known as Texlon® Variable Shading.
This variable ETFE system allows the two printed layers within the system to move together and apart, which affects the level of shading. By altering the light transmittance properties of the roof, and ultimately uses Texlon® ETFE’s practical climatic control potential as an artistic visual addition to this project. At night the skylights glow with a soft light and transform into iconic lanterns.
The prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena was their first facility occupying the renovated Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel. The architectural firm, Daly Genik Architects, was selected to transform this complex into a new studio and gallery spaces for the school. The three sculptural variable shading ETFE skylights are located above the studio spaces, designed by DGA.
The building is among the first in Pasadena to be granted LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and one of the first renovated buildings in the country to achieve certification.
