A Sustainable Texlon® ETFE Atrium over the former Herder Publishing House in Freiburg

The refurbishment of the listed Herder Verlag building shows the University of Freiburg’s commitment to sustainable design. The design team incorporated a translucent Texlon® ETFE atrium supported by four tree-like steel columns that support and transfer the loads. This courtyard has been transformed into a foyer and vibrant social space that can be used all year round. The Forest Science Faculty uses this impressive building with its atrium that lets natural light in.

Environmentally Friendly Natural Light

The Texlon® ETFE atrium allows natural light into the interior and this natural lighting is supported by environmentally friendly lighting. Opting for a Texlon® ETFE roof brings massive savings in terms of lighting costs over the entire lifecycle of this structure. Opening vents in the façade and in the Texlon® ETFE cladding system act as ventilation and smoke extraction. The excellent thermal insulation properties of the Texlon® ETFE cladding contribute significant energy savings in winter and in summer, the roof can be opened at night to maximize cooling of the space. As a result, the building strikes a perfect balance between being aesthetically beautiful and environmentally friendly.

Green, Smart, and Profitable Solutions

The use and the energetic visibility of inner courtyards, passages and visibility under monument taste can thus be achieved quickly and with little planning differences.

We are the only ones who have full EPD certification. Sound pretty green for a transparent solution? Absolutely. Add to that the longevity and legendary durability of the technology and you have quite possibly one of the smartest solutions at hand.
