A Canopy for British International School Kuala Lumpur

Initially, the school owner really wanted to use ETFE for one of their schools in China, but did not find a suitable solution to include it in this building. Therefore, they chose Texlon® ETFE as a canopy for their next school in Kuala Lumpur.

The canopy at British School KL – The British International School of Kuala Lumpur | The British Schools Foundation was an in-house design solution by Vector Foiltec Singapore, especially created for this school.

It Was Worth the Wait – A Perfect Use Case for ETFE in Architecture

As the weather is typically very hot and humid during the rainy season, it was natural to cover the outdoor multi-purpose playgrounds and activity fields. By covering the activity field, the school created a venue that can be used at any time, day or night. The children use the covered space for sports practice and games, recess, competitions and school events. The roof on plan measures 59 m x 46 m, the clear span between the columns measures over 46 m.

In addition to the shelter function of the canopy, the printed ETFE foils provide thermal protection and anti-glare properties. We used 14 two-layer ETFE cushions with a dot hexagon print in our darkest shade. The foils cut the UV exposure by 75%. So, parents can be sure that their children are protected from a sun burn and do not experience heat exhaustion during extended events such as soccer tournaments.

Ongoing Performance For 10 Years

Our client gave us a tight budget to meet and a comprehensive scope including steelwork for the roof trusses, columns and gutters. This was in addition to the design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the Texlon® ETFE cushions. The combination of our smart installation methods and efficient steel engineering let us meet the budget and fulfil our scope. We finished our works in mid-2012 and the canopy continues to perform.
