ETFE Skylights

EMPAC, at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, brings art, entertainment and science all under one roof. It is the ideal environment for human interaction with digital media. In 2001, RPI initiated a competition by inviting four of the world’s leading architects to submit a design. The jury selected Grimshaw, a London-based firm founded by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw. This team decided to incorporate Texlon® ETFE skylights into the design.

Typically finding a balance between acoustics and the aesthetics of architecture is a challenge. But in this case both were done magnificently in tandem. The entrance to the large concert hall, is unique, as you enter from above and go down into the hall. The areas leading to the entrance, in the middle of the building, are covered with Texlon® ETFE skylights. This allows for a wonderful glow for evening as individuals enter for evening performances and superior natural light that floods in during the day.
