The First ETFE Project in Cambodia

The K Mall in Cambodia is the first ETFE project in the country. The development of Urbanland, one of the largest developers in the country, is situated in a new emerging area of Phnom Penh. K Mall hosts supermarkets, fashion stores, and a cinema. A Texlon^® ETFE canopy with a span of 30 meters, with a slight twist, covers the entrance.

Unique Canopy Design

Vector Foiltec designed, fabricated, supplied, and installed the 500 m² ETFE canopy. A two-layer ETFE installation, with 7 ETFE cushions, forms this protective canopy. The whole Texlon^® ETFE system for K Mall has a unique design, perfectly meeting the customers wishes and expectations. We worked closely with the architect HKA & Partners.

With our specialized print technology, we added a silver print on the bottom side of the upper ETFE layer. This effects high thermal performance, with high light transmission. Further, the printed foil has anti-glare properties for the entrance under the canopy.

Steel Savings Thanks to Lightweight ETFE System

The canopy includes a very thin steel structure. Part of our scope included the design of that steel structure, which supports our Texlon^® ETFE cushions. Tapered arch beams, each having multiple radii, are built-up sections fashioned from steel plates. Such designs are value-engineering at its best – highly efficient as such. They result in further savings for our clients. Texlon^® ETFE is well known for its lightweight characteristics and cost reducing impact on buildings. Furthermore, the light weight of the system aids in lowering the projects’ overall carbon footprint.

Based on over 1,500 projects in over 100 countries we learned that the costs for an ETFE solution can be approximately 30% less than for a comparable glazing solution.
