The Heart of the Local Community

This beautiful project, Kai Tahi, in downtown Porirua, New Zealand, is rapidly becoming the heart of the local community!

Architects Chris Moller and Mackay Curtis (Sam Curtis) designed the project, featuring a long timber-framed gathering and eating space clad with Texlon® ETFE. The walls showcase stunning hand-drawn artwork depicting Pacific life and the lunar calendar.

Vector Foiltec worked closely with the client and design team to ensure an extraordinary level of design and detailing for the project.

Facing the Extremes for an Optimized Design

Key design considerations for the Vector Foiltec team included the local challenging environment:

  • Some of the highest wind loads in New Zealand
  • Proximity to the sea
  • High UV exposure
  • Location in an area of considerable seismic activity.

Sustainability is Key for Kai Tahi

Additionally, Texlon® ETFE was the natural choice for the project due to its tangible sustainability benefits, including:

  • 100% recyclable materials
  • Low embodied energy characteristics
  • Low carbon footprint.

Innovative Facade Design for Natural Light and Shielding Occupants

The Vector Foiltec triangular Texlon® ETFE facade and roof cushions allow filtered natural light during the day while enclosing the space at night. This design maintains a comfortable environment, shielding occupants from the high winds and variable weather that the region is famous for!
