Primark and its Texlon® ETFE Facade in Birmingham
The world’s largest Primark store has a new face and it is made out of Texlon® ETFE. Located in the heart of Birmingham, England, The Pavilion shopping district is home to several retail stores including Primark. The Pavilion has undergone many transformations in the past, however, none as mesmerizing as this double sided renovation of the Primark store with ETFE cladding. A double sided facade project with one facade facing Moor Street and the other facing High Street.
In order to combine the Texlon® ETFE system, Eyetech and Rainscreen cladding to create a modern and impressive facade design, the collaboration between Vector Foiltec and 3DReid Architects was very important. The entrance facing Moor Street is comprised of nine ETFE cushions, and the entrance facing High Street is made up of seven ETFE cushions. Together, the two sides add up to a total amount of 453 m² of Texlon® ETFE. However, individually, they stand at 260 m² and 193 m² respectively.
Beautiful Aesthetic Possibilities Create Impact
Since the early stages of the renovation draft and concept, Vector Foiltec was contacted to consult and advise on the matter of using ETFE for the facade. ETFE is perfect for the project because of its dynamic capabilities. Further, ETFE creates beautiful aesthetics possibilities and a striking visual connection with consumers.
In addition, ETFE has low sound pollution during its installation process, which was desired for the bustling commercial area. As a result, that allows for an installation without significant disturbances to surrounding areas. ETFE also provided the opportunity for a vertical emphasis on design that would establish a relationship between the facade, window displays, lighting and signage.
Building Sustainably
Among its defining characteristics, ETFE has the ability to reduce the carbon footprint of a project, while having a long life cycle. In other words, ETFE was picked for this facade project because the client wanted a design with life cycle of 60 years and over. Texlon® ETFE serves this purpose perfectly with its strong durability and extended life cycle. ETFE is resistant against weathering and dirt accumulation.
