Elegant, Sustainable and Durable System

The Texlon® ETFE roof on the Fisht Olympic Stadium creates a stunning skyline that is reflective and sympathetic of the surrounding landscape. The stadium, which was used to stage the 2014 Winter Olympics’ opening, closing and the medal ceremonies throughout the games required a technology that was elegant, sustainable and durable.

Texlon® ETFE Meets Complex Needs

Populous originally considered a number of different materials but only Texlon® ETFE was able to meet the complex construction, geometry and maintenance needs of this stadium project at a cost-effective price. When weight considerations became paramount, the low mass of the Texlon® ETFE meant that additional structural allowances could be utilised elsewhere.

Spectacular Illumination

The project Sochi used the two different foils in tandem for maximum effect – the translucent foils allow light into the building while the more opaque foil disperses direct sunlight providing comfort for the spectators. At night time, the combination of Texlon® ETFE with low wattage LED lighting creates a spectacular display.

In the local language, Adygeyan, “fisht” means “white head” and the stadium design resembles a snow-capped mountain peak. The vision was for the roof to give the building an appearance of snowy peaks, ensuring that it sits in harmony with the backdrop of Caucasus Mountains in the north. The openness of the stadium also provides stunning views of the Black Sea in the south.

Sport Events

Along with being the focal point of the Winter Olympics, the legacy of this iconic stadium continued with the 2014 Paralympic Games. It hosted the Confederations Cup in 2017 and also hosts FIFATM World Cup games in 2018. In 2016, the preparation for the FIFA Confederations Cup and World Cup was done. Among other changes, the roof in the middle – not build with ETFE – was removed in order to make the stadium compliant with FIFA regulations. You can still admire the whole 36,620 m² of our Texlon® ETFE system.
