Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is an award-winning, world-class mixed-use urban development located in the heart of Bukit Bintang and arguably the most iconic and successful mall in Malaysia. Opened to visitors in September 2007, it set new standards in how malls should be designed and operated. A Texlon® ETFE system for a canopy and rain screen is an architectural must-have for the building complex.

Texlon® ETFE Solution

The “Connection” is located within Pavilion KL and is a multi-level avenue of restaurants and bars starting at level 3 (essential ground level), which is covered by a high-level glass canopy above level 8. Vector Foiltec was tasked by the developer to help solve the problem of driving rain that drenched outside seating areas because the glass canopy was too high.

The solution developed by KL Pavilions Design Studio was in two parts: first, large Texlon® ETFE vertical louvers were introduced. They were designed to allow natural light and ventilation to pass into the space to ensure the outdoor feel remained. Second, a Texlon® ETFE canopy, which fully protects the tenants and shoppers from the elements 24/7.

Loads Challenge Solved

The new steel structures could not induce loads onto the existing RC structures, requiring structural reinforcement. This was a challenge as the spans where long. Also, the work had to be installed quickly so disruption to the mall was minimized. Therefore, Vector Foiltec designers and light-weight steel specialist engineers designed steel structures, considering low vertical loads, and minimal horizontal loads, on the existing RC columns. This was important to ensure to structural reinforcement. In addition, the design of the steelwork and Texlon® ETFE system were maximized by pre-fabricating materials, and installation and hoisting occurred at night to ensure safety and faster installation that did not affect tenants and pedestrians.
Vector Foiltec provides many “total solution” options for clients, to help make the process as simple as possible for the Developer, Authorities, Tenants and Public.

Single-layer Rainscreen and Multi-layer System Canopy

The vertical rainscreen (first image, illuminated with blue light) was made up of 100 m2 of transparent single-layer Texlon® ETFE panels that are 7.7 x 1.5 meters. The canopy itself was made from 2-layer Texlon® ETFE cushions. The maximum cushion size was 22 meters x 4.2 meters. A print on the top layer was included for thermal protection and allowed for an amazing projector screen for the lighting that gives the 500 m² canopy a distinct day-time and night-time identity.
