Texlon^® ETFE Roof Follows the Flow of a River

The Al Assima Mall is a one-of-a-kind project with a unique roof design. It is a fully functional entertainment center in the heart of Kuwait City. Attached to the Al Assima Tower and Al Assima Residence, the Assima Mall provides office spaces and long-term hotel residency for tourists respectively.

The Al Assima Mall design was inspired by its location, gridlocked in the city center, and facing north bound towards the river. The architects gave the Assima Mall a unique aesthetic to parallel to its surroundings. The ETFE roofing here is designed to replicate the natural flow of a river from a birds-eye perspective. Therefore, bringing to the urban environment a more scenic and organic feel.

This project was commissioned by Salhia Real Estate Company. PLP Architects, the General Contractor – Ahmadiah, and Vector Foiltec all worked together to make the project a success. Vector Foiltec provided engineering and installed 6,814 m² of Texlon^® ETFE.

Texlon^® ETFE has the unique ability to adapt and transform areas into spacious and all-encompassing spaces. The Assima Mall’s ETFE atrium bends through the structure like a moving river. It connects retail levels, restaurants, entertainment areas, the main entrance and the parking below. This allows for the establishment an unobstructed visual connection throughout all 6 stories of the mall.

ETFE has many features and characteristics that make it a remarkable cladding material. The result, whether building roofs or facades, ETFE is the smart solution. Moreover, it reaches intricate design concepts and accomplishes seemingly impossible structural engineering challenges.

Success, it was the result of our work at The Avenues. This prompted Salhia Real Estate Company and PLP Architects to ask Vector Foiltec to be part of the Al Assima project.

Next, with a very complex design concept, the client and the architect wanted to create a roofing system that was one of a kind. Therefore, it required a very intricate and demanding geometric arrangement of Texlon^® ETFE cushions. And so, Vector Foiltec worked closely with PLP architects, to meet budget and geometric constraints.
