Skylight, Sunshine and Studies

There was a monumental renovation at the University of Michigan. The School of Kinesiology (originally constructed in 1915 and formerly called the Edward Henry Kraus Building) includes classrooms, laboratories, academic and career advising offices, collaboration spaces, and more. They are now all in one amazing location, right in the heart of central campus. For the first time in the school’s history, faculty, students, staff, and research are together under one roof. A roof that includes a Texlon® ETFE skylight.

Natural Light? Floods Through the ETFE Skylight

Kraus Hall, with it’s 480 qm ETFE skylight, allows for natural light to flood the atrium. This is important with the cold Ann Arbor winters that the students and faculty experience each year. The building acts as a centerpiece for the campus, and a home base for the Kinesiology students. The skylight includes 10, three layered, Texlon® ETFE cushions, with special print on the exterior layer of the skylight.

Sustainability? LEED Gold Certified

Not only does the building create a new, and exceptional space, but it does it with sustainability in mind. Therefore, in 2021, the building was LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by U.S. Green Building Council) certified.
