ETFE Dome for Rotterdam
The Rotterdam Expertise and Exhibition Centre is part of a new initiative to study the construction of ‘floating communities’. Along with the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, the pavilion was the first of its kind built to showcase sustainable construction and responds to the collective objectives of Rotterdam to ensure the city remains climate change resilient in the future.
Designed by Deltasync and Public Domain Architects, the pavilion was built in one of Rotterdam’s city harbours and has since been relocated to the Quai of the ‘Rijnhaven’. In 2021, the Pavilion moved to RDM Rotterdam. The pavilions three semi-transparent domes are clad in Texlon® ETFE. It is a lightweight (1% the weight of glass), fully recyclable and low maintenance foil which minimizes the floating structures support needs. This distinctive structure stands at 12 m tall, covers an approximate surface area of 1,330 m² and the three domes range from 18.5 m to 24 m in diameter.
