This workplace was designed to meet the world’s most advanced sustainability levels. This prestigious zero-energy and zero-carbon workplace at Global Change Institute, signifies the commitment of the University of Queensland to embed sustainability into all aspects of university life.
Lightweight Texlon® ETFE foil cushions span the atrium roof of the Global Change Institute. The supporting structure of the atrium roof consists of aluminum frames, which are connected to a filigree steel substructure. Six 3-layer foil cushions are clamped into these aluminum frames. The top layer of ETFE foil is printed with a graphic grid. Thus, reducing the amount of light and heat entering the building.
The design team at Hassell incorporated a translucent Texlon® ETFE atrium roof, which allows natural light into the interior. It does this while insulating it from the heat of the sun. Additionally, the optimal natural lighting is supported by environmentally friendly LED lighting. Opting for a Texlon® ETFE roof brings massive savings in terms of the cost of artificial lighting over the entire lifecycle of this structure.
Sustainability Award
The building strikes a perfect balance between being aesthetically beautiful and environmentally friendly. The Global Change Institute building is a perfect example of how the improvement of design and construction techniques allows buildings to operate more efficiently in sub-tropical climates. Therefore, the use of Texlon® ETFE compliments the building’s effective waste management. Rain water collecting and solar power systems to reinforce eco-efficiency and sustainability goals. Further, the Global Change institute won the 2013 BPN Sustainability Award.
