The refurbishment of the listed Herder Verlag building shows the University of Freiburg’s commitment to sustainable design. The design team incorporated a translucent Texlon® ETFE atrium supported by four tree like steel columns that support and transfer the loads. This courtyard has been transformed into a foyer and vibrant social space that can be used all year round.
The Texlon® ETFE atrium allows natural light into the interior and this natural lighting is supported by environmentally friendly lighting. Opting for a Texlon® ETFE roof brings massive savings in terms of lighting costs over the entire lifecycle of this structure. Opening vents in the façade and in the Texlon® ETFE cladding system act as ventilation and smoke extraction. The excellent thermal insulation properties of the Texlon® ETFE cladding contributes significant energy savings in winter and in summer, the roof can be opened at night to maximize cooling of the space. The building strikes a perfect balance between being aesthetically beautiful and environmentally friendly.
